Overview
The X12 is XSTO's answer to the question many powerchair users ask first: what about the stairs? Its chassis combines four wheels with a pair of tracks. On level ground and gentle slopes it drives on its wheels; at a staircase or kerb it brings the tracks into play, and sensors help it line up, adjust its posture and correct its direction as it climbs.
The seat is designed to stay level through all of this, and it can also rise, tilt, recline and gently rock for comfort. It is a large, heavy machine - more like a small vehicle than a folding chair - so it suits people whose home or daily routes include steps that would otherwise need a stairlift, ramp or helper.
Good for
Highlights

- Get on and off from the front or the side
- LiDAR collision warning, rear parking radar and an alert for steps or drops ahead
- Seat height 490–762 mm, tilt from -8° to 40° and recline from 90° to 121°
- Quoted range of 35 km on flat ground from two batteries
Things to consider
Our honest notes, from XSTO’s figures and UK rules. Worth raising with the seller or your assessor.
- It weighs about 115 kg before its batteries are fitted and cannot be lifted like a folding chair. The UK distributor says it needs a suitable vehicle with a ramp or hoist.
- Your stairs must suit it: steps under 200 mm high, a stair angle under 35°, and enough landing space (1400 × 1400 mm for an L-shaped turn, 1400 × 2000 mm for a U-turn). Have your stairs measured before ordering.
- Its top speed of 12 km/h (about 7.5 mph) is above the 4 mph pavement limit. XSTO does not state a UK class; ask the seller how it is supplied and whether it meets the GOV.UK equipment list for road use.
- HMRC says class 3 vehicles only qualify for VAT relief if designed solely for disabled people. The supplier decides whether VAT relief applies, so ask them to confirm before you rely on the lower price.
- At 1210 mm long unfolded it is longer than the 1200 mm wheelchair size that National Rail says most trains are designed around.
- Each of the two batteries works out at roughly 645 Wh (volts × amp-hours), so air travel needs early discussion with the airline.
- XSTO's store quotes a 6 to 8 week delivery note and a headline of 30 steps a minute, while the spec table says 25 up and 30 down. Treat stair speed as a guide.

Certifications and approvals
We did not find product-specific certification documents (such as UKCA or CE declarations, or MHRA registration) on XSTO’s product pages. XSTO’s corporate site shows a range of approval marks without saying which apply to which model. If approvals matter to you, ask the seller for the documents for this model.
UK rules for this model
UK class: not stated by XSTO
XSTO quotes a top speed of 12 km/h. That is faster than the 4 mph (6 km/h) class 2 limit, so on pavements it must be kept to 4 mph. Road use needs a class 3 vehicle with the equipment GOV.UK lists, and class 3 vehicles must be registered with DVLA.
Ask the seller to confirm in writing which class it is supplied as, whether it needs DVLA registration, and whether VAT relief applies.
