Overview

The TR250T is not a wheelchair. It is a powered, tracked carrier: a manual wheelchair (with its user) is secured onto it, and the unit then drives up or down the stairs on non-slip tracks while a helper guides it with its operating handle. XSTO pitches it at families who currently have to bump a wheelchair up steps by hand.

Because the wheelchair user stays in their own chair, it can be an alternative to a stairlift or a stair-climbing powerchair where the stairs are shared, in a building you do not own, or somewhere you visit rather than live. It breaks down into modules for the car. Using it safely depends on the helper being trained and on the stairs being within its limits.

Things to consider

Our honest notes, from XSTO’s figures and UK rules. Worth raising with the seller or your assessor.

  • XSTO presents it as a way for a family member or carer to take a wheelchair user up and down stairs, using the operating handle - it is not designed for the person in the wheelchair to operate alone. Get proper training before using it.
  • XSTO says it fits wheelchairs with 20 to 25 inch wheels, and the 130 kg limit includes the wheelchair itself, which rules out most powerchairs.
  • Stairs must have steps no higher than 180 mm and an angle no steeper than 35°, with enough landing space to turn. Measure before you buy.
  • At 56 kg it is heavy, even though it comes apart into modules.
  • XSTO describes battery life in steps (840–1,000) on one page and in floors (46–100) on another. Ask for the figure in the manual.
  • We could not find a UK stockist listing the TR250T in September 2026. HMRC guidance says stair and chair lifts designed for use with a wheelchair can qualify for VAT relief, but whether this product qualifies is for the supplier to decide.

Certifications and approvals

We did not find product-specific certification documents (such as UKCA or CE declarations, or MHRA registration) on XSTO’s product pages. XSTO’s corporate site shows a range of approval marks without saying which apply to which model. If approvals matter to you, ask the seller for the documents for this model.

UK rules for this model

A stair climber, not a chair you drive

The UK class 2 and class 3 rules cover powered wheelchairs and scooters that you drive. This is a helper-operated device for stairs, so ask the supplier about training, safe use in your home and whether VAT relief applies.
