Overview
The M4 is the chair that introduced many people to XSTO. A sensor-based control system keeps the seat level as the ground tilts, so going up or down a gentle ramp feels steadier than in a conventional powerchair, and it stops when you let go of the controls. The seat rises electrically, which makes kitchen worktops, shop counters and eye-level conversations easier to reach.
It is built for everyday life around the home and town rather than rough country. The frame folds at the press of a button and comes apart into sections for the car, and the front wheels can move in any direction, which helps in tight hallways. XSTO also sells an M4H version with a higher backrest and a headrest for people who need more support through the day.

Things to consider
Our honest notes, from XSTO’s figures and UK rules. Worth raising with the seller or your assessor.
- At 51.5 kg without its battery it is heavy, even though it folds. Someone will still need to lift sections into a car, and UK retailers quote different weights for the heaviest section, so check this in person at a demonstration.
- The 115 kg limit includes anything you carry, which is lower than many heavier-duty powerchairs.
- XSTO rates it for slopes up to 10° and obstacles up to 50 mm. It is not a kerb-climber or an off-road chair, and XSTO advises slowing down on loose sand or rough ground.
- Range figures differ between XSTO's own pages (15 km in the spec table, up to 17 km in its FAQ). Real-world range depends on terrain, weight, temperature and speed.
- With a 6 km/h top speed and no lighting listed, it is designed as a pavement chair. XSTO does not state a UK class, so ask the seller to confirm it in writing.
- The standard battery works out at roughly 396 Wh (volts × amp-hours, the method the CAA uses). That is above the 300 Wh limit that applies if an airline needs a lithium battery removed, which is why XSTO offers a smaller travel battery. Always check with your airline.
- XSTO's own pages do not agree on how many sections it splits into (three on the store page, four on the corporate page). Ask the seller to show you.
- Warranty wording varies between XSTO pages. The UK distributor quotes 5 years on the frame and 1 year on electrical parts and the battery. Get the terms in writing before you buy.

Certifications and approvals
We did not find product-specific certification documents (such as UKCA or CE declarations, or MHRA registration) on XSTO’s product pages. XSTO’s corporate site shows a range of approval marks without saying which apply to which model. If approvals matter to you, ask the seller for the documents for this model.
UK rules for this model
UK class: not stated by XSTO
XSTO quotes a top speed of 6 km/h. That matches the class 2 limit of 4 mph (6 km/h) for pavement chairs.
Ask the seller to confirm in writing which class it is supplied as, whether it needs DVLA registration, and whether VAT relief applies.
